Comment UIUC, mid-90s, intro to comp sci (CS125) (Score 1) 755

I experienced this in college. Our introduction course at UIUC used Scheme on NextStep workstations. It didn't go well. Many of my classmates were livid. They viewed FP and Scheme as useless. "A recruiter laughed when he saw Scheme on my resume", was one comment I recall from the frequent rants about the subject on the course newsgroup. A few were completely perplexed. The average score on the first major exam was horrific and jarring - and this is in a top-tier CS program. Additionally, unless they chose an AI concentration, this course was the last time these students used FP. My guess is that a number of otherwise talented individuals became, at the very least, disenchanted about Comp Sci or even computing as a career, because of their experience in this class. Was that FP/Scheme learning curve/speed-bump/road-block really necessary? I guess the faculty decided "No" : By 1996(7?) the course was overhauled, and they switched to Java.
