As irrelevant as the above quotes may sound, I believe that as the collective technological level of the human race increases, this is becoming more and more revelant.
Just as you can identify a price for freedom, there are also many prices that a country's people must pay for allowing privacy in the age of ever increasing information. And, IMO, a government can and *must* put a price (so to speak) on human lives for the good of the whole.
For example, take a "abduction alert" system to the extremes. Whenever there has been a reported abduction, all communication systems are interupted for say 2 hours with a notice. Every person in the country is then required by law to stop everything they are doing for two hours and go searching for the lost child.
Many emotional extremists may say "It would save lives, and you cant put a value on lives, and you're saving a life, so it'd be worth anything!!". But that is not true at all.
Its about time that goverments started thinking logically and not emotionally, for ideals and not frivolous specifics, for the good of the many instead of the good of the one.
Now off to start a empire with Rombulin ideals on a distant planet :)
