Submission + - Quarter of Sun-Like Stars Host Earth-Size Worlds (discovery.com)

astroengine writes: "Although there appears to be a mysterious dearth of exoplanets smaller than Earth, astronomers using data from NASA’s Kepler space telescope have estimated that nearly a quarter of all sun-like stars in our galaxy play host to worlds 1-3 times the size of our planet. These astonishing results were discussed by Geoff Marcy, professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, during a talk the W. M. Keck Observatory 20th Anniversary Science Meeting at The Fairmont Orchid, Kohala Coast, Hawai’i, on Thursday. “23 percent of sun-like stars have a planet within (1-2.8 Earth radii) just within Mercury’s orbit,” said Marcy. “I’ll say that again, because that number really surprised me: 23 percent of sun-like stars have a nearly-Earth-sized planet orbiting in tight orbits within 0.25 AU of the host stars.”"

Malware Running On Graphics Cards 103

An anonymous reader writes "Given the great potential of general-purpose computing on graphics processors, it is only natural to expect that malware authors will attempt to tap the powerful features of modern GPUs to their benefit. In this paper, the authors demonstrate the feasibility of implementing a malware that can utilize the GPU (PDF) to evade virus scanning applications. Moreover, the authors discuss the potential of more sophisticated attacks, like accessing the screen pixels periodically to harvest private data displayed on the user screen, or to trick the the user by displaying false, benign-looking information when visiting rogue web sites (e.g., overwriting suspicious URLs with benign-looking ones in the browser's address bar)."

Feed Steve Jobs talks "A Greener Apple", LED backlit Macs this year (engadget.com)

In his second public letter in recent times, Steve Jobs has responded to high profile accusations from environmental organizations that Apple is not taking the matter of the environment seriously enough, with a point by point article that highlights Apple's record and puts forward improvements for the future. Going down the list of toxic chemicals usually found in computers, Steve highlights Apple's elimination of lead packed CRTs, compliance with strict European Union regulations regarding cadmium, hexavalent chromium and brominated flame retardants, the expectence that Apple will recycle 30% of the weight of all its products by 2010, and most interestingly, makes the announcement that Apple plans to "introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007". There's no question that this little tidbit will be enough to satisfy the average Apple addict -- LED MacBook Pro anyone? -- but will the environmental brief be enough to placate the rather passionate Greenpeace?

Ofcourse if we hadn't gone into Iraq in the first place we'd have plenty of resources available for Sudan. disagreeing with the Presidents decision to go into Iraq does not make me a Liberal, John McCain and Pat Buchanan are included on my list of people I greatly admire. It would have been nice if any of the reasons given for going to Iraq had proven to be true. CBS gets crucified and fires 4 execs for getting a story wrong while Tennet and others who completely blew the intelligence behind our reasons for going to war get medals. Bash Liberals all you want, the hypocrisy of the right is mind numbing.
