Here's the official call-out for the slashdot "Show me yer equipment!" game. Here's how it works:

Take a photo of your workstation area, or your conglomeration of gear, or your location of main computing. Also, if you have an easily photographable cache of machines you work on frequently but are not your main computing area, this could also be applicable. Multiple entries are permissible. The pics are screened, so there won't be dupes and so Mr. Goatse won't be a participant's workstation. Try not to be in the pic, as that will give it away (especially if you were in the FK HOF entry contest)

Note that this is the area, not just the box itself. Try to include the desk, chair, etc. To submit your entr(y/ies), go to http://slashdot.kormoc.com/eq/ (graciously scripted and provided by Kormoc) and enter in your stuff. it will be randomized, and when it comes time to post up the stuff, I will go through and filter it so Mr. Goatse doesn't get through, and then we can start guessing.

Once there are enough entries, i'll give a 3 day warning or so...i am aiming for posting ~1 week from now, we'll see. Anyway, sorry for keeping everyone waiting...was working on the technical details.

Update: File size limit: 500k. if you need larger, let us know and we'll up the limit. PHP script was designed with .jpg and some small .gif files in mind.

  • As many times as you mentioned Mr. Goatse, some asshat is gonna submit his machine, with Mr. Goatse set as his wallpaper just to be smart. ;)

    • That, my friend, is what the GIMP is for ^_^ at least i didn't repeatedly mention tubgirl as well. i really need to not post stuff when tired.
  • ... and is there a size limit? I keep getting 'You forgot something, like your picture', after something seems to have been transferred.

    Using both Epiphany 0.6 and Mozilla Firebird CVS pre-0.6...

    • What file format are you using? i have a feeling he may have written the script with .jpg in mind...

      no size limit, but if it's too big i may GIMP it down to size.

      • It is over 500k - straight out of the digital camera, but no worry, I'll just scale it down. You might want to put a notice about it though.

          • hey, it was fine with me...i don't need entries like "gentoo_1.4_rc4-x86_livecd.iso" (194 MB) as a "picture" of their workstation

            I hope that my crapcam works, because just right now I have no way to get a digicam in my hands. Don't know anyone who has one *and* would lend it to me, and I simply don't have the cash to go out and buy one over lunch -- which I would have done a year ago.... *sigh* Checking account at 900Euro and salary faaaaar away and no bills payed yet... What did I think when I left my parents???

                I always laugh when that argument is given to me. My parents virtually granted me every freedom. I could do whatever I wanted, get drunk, party, take girls (Yeah! That's going to happen...but my brother did)

                There were two conditions: you go to work (DoH! If you live alone, you need to go to work too) and you keep it reasonably quite after 22:00 (that's when my mom goes to bed usually)
                Apart from that? Uhm? Do whatever you please, you're adults...

                    • Maybe when your parents are cool, and don't fuck with you, it's cool, but in my home, there are only a few people left, and out I go.

                      I take it you have younger siblings you are sticking around to take care of?

                      It sucks when your parents can't/won't take care of their responsiblities. It sucks even worse when you have younger siblings caught up in the mess as well.

                      In any case it sounds like it will be a bit of a relief to have only yourself to worry about.

                    • And the sad part is I got burned by everyone in my family, and they really don't care. So I decided to start helping myself and they can continue to whatever ends meet them.

                      An important life lesson that is rather hard to act on is that you have to help yourself before you help others. Unfortunately it is often difficult to apply this in the midst of a problem involving loved ones.

                      Situations like this are like trying to help save someone from drowning. If you're not careful the victim will try to pull you

  • Some of those images are wayyyyy to big. I've downloaded the existing ones that are large and re-sized them to be at least useable.

    If you want I can re-upload them to the site provided with the file name resizedimage# (as the file name) and just use Re-Sized Image as the Slashdot Username?

    • That'd work fine. in the end when I post the official page to guess from, I'll post those ones.

      In a related note (To the official page to guess from), my domain server (not the page yet) is back up so that's probably where the page will go. It was down due to file system corruption, and my administrator has replaced it with something a bit more robust.
  • I have to bail out of the contest. I tried my crapcam today and the stupid thing doesn't want to work under Windows 2000. I must have done something wrong.

    Someday I'll buy myself a 300$++ digital camera, but not tomorrow. Sorry. I would have loved to take part in your contest.
