Avoid any product claiming to be part of the metaverse like the plague.

If such a thing ever exists in a singular form, it will only be to sell you something or monetize you. It will probably be run by a conglomerate of corporations, hidden behind a veneer of "community" maybe even something with blockchain (assuming noone has been able to put a stake in that bullshit by then).

Microsoft and Facebook just want to be the ones to exploit you in the metaverse, and scammers will get in the way of that.

Who cares? For 90% of users, including most software developers, Linux or Windows or ChromeOS, are just a quick stop before getting to a Chromium-based web browser or VS.Code.

I don't really care about the UI/UX of the OS anymore - and it is liberating!

Even for the rest of the population, the OS is just a quick stop before getting to your Game library.

No.

This is naive. Crypto is currently metastasizing through pension funds and IRAs and who knows what else.

A crypto crash would affect you right now. And it's only getting worse because people who don't understand or care about the implications have too much invested already.

Has any one actually read these? Only "Interpreting docstrings without using common sense" contains any real information. "Copyright implications of the use of code repositories to train a machine learning model" was definitely written by either Microsoft or GitHub's lawyers. And I'm pretty certain the last one was written by a CS undergraduate (it gives a rudimentary overview of machine learning concepts and then poses the question "what if teh AI use mah code snippet?")

Deep stuff, FSF. You should be proud to have published these community "white papers" instead of actually paying someone who is good at thinking to write about these issues. Or having an AI do it.

You don't need anything like a dollar on hand for every dollar's worth of cryptocurrency to peg the value of that currency to the dollar, you just need to have enough dollars on hand to cover immediate demands. If that demand grows too quickly, however, it's like a run on the bank and the system will collapse.

When a few too many folks try to convert stablecoins to currency, the corporate bonds will fail, and everyone burns. This will not end any other way.

It is also truly terrifying that pension funds, public companies, etc are buying into this.

There is no math trick on a distributed hash chain based ledger that can save people from their own stupidity.

Phones and laptops do not need such rapid hardware refreshes. Laptops were fast enough for most of our use cases decades ago, and phones over ten years ago. Making software more efficient to reduce energy cost by convincing the masses to switch from python/matlab/java over to lower level languages in general is misguided.

I don't think the AWS guy is really proposing that - it's more something like "we're gonna cut our energy costs by optimizing AWS frameworks and save money." The good for the environment part is just marketing. Plus it doesn't hurt to get all the corporate types in your company on board with enlarging your personal fiefdom (I am in charge of all things Rust at Amazon, optimize the world, RAWWR!) Optimization is usually one of the last things to worry about when crafting software systems.

As the Parent said, throw more hardware at the compute starved, focus sustainability efforts on energy generation and storage.

It does not help that Elon goes out of his way to be anti-Biden on twitter, it seems like Elon keeps grudges just as bad as the government does. Maybe he needs a class on psychology, strategy, and diplomacy.

Or maybe he doesn't. Think about what effect that kind of signaling has on a substantial portion of our representatives tasked with regulating area's of Elon's focus and doling out contracts. The ones who aren't immediately smitten with thoughts of "yeah he's on our side! USA USA" (i.e. democrats) are more likely to focus on science and results, where spaceX also wins. Now some of the stuff he puts out is just him tweeting half-baked stuff, often somewhat offensive, possibly while high. But I'm pretty sure the Biden comments are strategic.
