Journal iminplaya's Journal: Hurricane season (no, it's duck season) 2

I've been watching the satellite pix for a few days now, and if I didn't know better (well actually, I don't), I would think there's at least a tropical storm forming off the coast of Georgia.
From the NOAA:
A NON-TROPICAL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM...CENTERED ABOUT 230 MILES
EAST-SOUTHEAST OF THE GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA COASTS...HAS BEEN
MOVING SLOWLY WESTWARD AT 5 TO 10 MPH. THIS SYSTEM IS PRODUCING
GALE-FORCE WINDS AND HEAVY SURF ALONG THE COASTS OF NORTH
CAROLINA...SOUTH CAROLINA...AND GEORGIA...WITH STRONGER WINDS
OFFSHORE. ASSOCIATED SHOWER ACTIVITY HAS INCREASED SINCE
YESTERDAY...BUT NO SIGNIFICANT STRENGTHENING OF THIS SYSTEM IS
EXPECTED. THE LOW IS BEING MONITORED FOR SIGNS OF TROPICAL OR
SUBTROPICAL CYCLONE DEVELOPMENT...AND AN AIR FORCE RESERVE
RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO INVESTIGATE THE SYSTEM
TOMORROW MORNING...IF NECESSARY.
-- the caps are theirs, I'm not shouting.

I've never seen something like this form this far north, and this early in the year. The Caribbean might be able rest a bit more easily this year. But don't take my word for it. I'm no climatologist. I just noticed something a bit out of the ordinary, and would like to know if this is a sign of things to come.

UPDATE: Well, it's official, and she has a name, Andrea. And we're still in the pre-season. Maybe we should put up some windmills and try to harvest some of that energy. There won't be too many birds around to worry about.

  • We were watching the RADAR all day from work, trying to figure out if we’d be able to go skating this evening. (We did, it was awesome, thanks for asking.) But when checking the Atlantic visible loop, it looked like a perfectly formed hurricane just sitting there, spinning stationary. I guess if I hadn’t been so pre-occupied with the question at hand, I might have wondered what the fuck that was doing there; those don’t go there.

    • Looks like it might get a name by tomorrow. The thing is just sitting there, like Wilma did over us for a full 48 hours. Yet the lights were back on in less than a week. The center of town had lights back on in less than 12 hours. AND nobody died as a result of the storm. Florida could learn a few lessons from us "frijoleros" about building construction. Could be a long summer.
