True, it's so annoying. I used to have the oneplus one and the back was a textured sandstone which was not slippery and meant I could go around with only a screen protector. I now have the oneplus 5 and have to have a case on the back (which totally negates all the thin design) and a front screen protector. Making phones more and more 'premium' with glass etc just means we will cheapen them with cases. Shame.

Definitely agree about potential healthcare benefits of wearables for people that need constant monitoring like diabetics, too. I have a fitbit watch for running - i thought i'd get bored of it really quickly and expected to return it, but its actually surprisingly useful. The inbuilt gps tracks my runs so I can leave my phone at home (I used to run with my phone on a belt which was annoying and bulky). It also tracks heartrate constantly which gives a more accurate estimation of calories burnt etc. That said it was quite expensive!

This is so common, a similar thing happened with my Grandad (drove the wrong way round a roundabout!) People will do anything to avoid admitting they can't do something it must be very difficult to give up your independence. Perhaps the move toward autonomous vehicles will soften the blow as we'll all still be able to get around in old age
