Comment South Park (Score 1) 683

I don't know why, but the "dumb dumb dumb dumb" piece from South Park just plopped into my head. I can see cases beyond just the end user (who aren't all dumb by the way, some know what they're doing) who would want/need that information in a useful manner. Support teams often ask their users for the browser version so they can help to solve problems. QA teams test with specific browsers, and knowing the version is important if a regression pops up for their site/software later on so they can try to isolate the cause. It seems like more wasted work to remove it than to just leave it in, while there are bigger problems to be solved.

Passenger Avoids Delay By Fixing Plane Himself 178

It would be a shame if an engineer on a recent Thomas Cook Airlines flight doesn't get a complimentary first class upgrade every time he flies. The engineer was on flight TCX9641 when it was announced that the trip would be delayed eight hours, while a mechanic was flown in to fix a problem. Luckily for the other passengers, the engineer happened to work for Thomsonfly Airlines, which has a reciprocal maintenance agreement with Thomas Cook. After about 35 minutes the man fixed the problem and the flight was on its way. A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook said, "When they announced there was a technical problem he came forward and said who he was. We checked his licence and verified he was who he said he was, and he was able to fix the problem to avoid the delay. We are very grateful that he was on the flight that day."

Cisco Introduces Rackmount Servers 93

1sockchuck writes "After shaking up the market for blade servers, Cisco Systems is launching a line of rackmount servers. But the company says its ambitions are more targeted than a full-scale 'all your racks are belong to us' assault on the volume server market. Cisco says it sees its 1U and 2U C-Series rackmount servers as offering an entry point to its Unified Computing System vision for companies who've built their data centers using rackmount servers instead of blades. But it thinks many customers will like the expanded memory capacity Cisco has built into the Xeon 5500/Nehalem EP processor."

Star Trek Game To Launch Alongside New Movie 82

Paramount announced yesterday that Star Trek D-A-C will be available for download for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC when the movie is released on May 8th. The acronym in the title stands for different types of gameplay: Deathmatch, Assault, and Conquest. It's an arcade-style game, with a solo mode as well as multiplayer modes that handle up to 12 players. According to Joystiq, "It's a top-down 3D space shooter that doesn't require a lot of hardcore gameplay experience to jump into, but it features a large amount of strategic gameplay that'll please hardcore gamers." Several screenshots have been released.

By chance, did you try a different scheduler to see if it has any effect on your server? The first bit of lag I noticed with the Completely Fair Scheduler was with synergy between my desktop and my laptop, and when digging into that problem, it was found that a compile option for the scheduler needed to be changed (in stock Ubuntu Gutsy). Unfortunately, more than a year later (with the option supposedly changed in Hardy, still stock), it still lags from time to time. When I get a chance, I'm going to try other schedulers to see if it makes a difference.
