Comment Long time Windows user here (Score 1) 147

I fully recommend Manjaro which is based on Arch. I had used Windows since version 3.0 and I was all-in on Microsoft until my dev work switched from .NET to NodeJS about 8 years ago or so. I even stuck with Window for a few years after that, but once I gave Manjaro a try around 2018, I never looked back. I have played around with Linux desktops since around the time of Red Hat 4 or so. I've setup Ubuntu desktops to play around with more than a few times, but especially with Ubuntu based distros - they would always fail to boot one day after an update. I assume this is due to the complex nature of managing multiple dependencies between the disparate repositories that must be added to their terrible package manager before you can even install any software outside their official repos, which are always lacking something.

Things I like about Manjaro: It just works and it's a rolling release so you always get the latest stuff (within 2 weeks or so). Their default installation uses XFCE which is the best minimalist Windows-like desktop I've seen. Their Add/Remove Software program is easy to use and it lets you install practically all the software that exists. Manjaro has worked for me on 2 different laptops and 3 different desktop workstations for years without a serious failure, only very occasional errors from 3rd party (AUR) packages, removed keys or expired certificates.

Some people might come here and comment about how Manjaro is bad because they made a mistake about renewing certificates once and because of some money handling issue which amounts to absolutely nothing IMO. It's good enough for the PinePhone people to make it their official distro and it's also generally very popular.

I hate them both too, but which Android phone or tablet can I get that can actually compete with a $399 iPhone or a $299 iPad? I had to pick one though, so I went with an iPhone because at least Apple is not an advertising company. Now, if they would just let me easily build and deploy apps onto my own phone. I can't find a way to do it without jumping through hoop after hoop.
