I remember back when the first hands free cell phones while driving laws came out. They were stupid. Using a phone was completely fine as long as you didnâ(TM)t hold it, never mind that the distraction of the phone is entirely with engagement and only in very small part by occupying a hand. It didnâ(TM)t matter, passing the law made the politicians look so good they raced to pass similar laws in every state. To this day everyone uses cell phones in the car, including with their hands. The laws were impotent, and just grandstanding. There are reasonable regulations you can pass on cell phones, but âoehands freeâ was the least impactful. They didnâ(TM)t take time to study the space first. Itâ(TM)s happening all over again now with AI. If you want to teach children how to navigate advanced technologies, you teach them how to navigate, you donâ(TM)t prohibit all access to them until they turn 16 like they were raised underground. Thatâ(TM)s just denying reality to grandstand. Itâ(TM)s very similar to teaching children how to use knives. You donâ(TM)t try to prevent them from ever using a knife.

ABC is just thinking a few moves ahead. If they air the Talarico interview, then after a short period of time, if Kimmel does not air a Republican interview of similar import, Republicans would demand one. That makes ABC look unfair immediately, but if they respond by airing such an interview, that makes them look weak to Kimmel's core audience, which leans left. Furthermore, they would be exposed to comparisons between the Talarico interview, forcing Kimmel to give a consequential Republican a softball interview, or having to give Talarico a hardball interview. They don't want that. If they fight back and do not air a Republican interview, they play right into the narrative that they are providing a platform for one party and not the other. They don't want to do that either. So they do the smartest thing they can do, they claim they would be harassed unreasonably for airing the Talarico interview, exciting their base, getting free marketing for the interview, seemingly adding to the narrative that Republicans are abusing the FCC, and forcing Republicans to explain themselves, rather than ABC having to play defense. This decision is simply the most reasonable thing for ABC to do, but does not mean if they aired Talarico's interview, they would be unfairly harassed by the FCC. There would just be no way to reasonably balance it out without looking bad/losing viewers.

Kimmel would have to obey the equal time rule and give interviews to Republican candidates amounting to the same time as the Talarico interview. He doesn't want to do that. The rest is spin.

Humans don't need to be smarter than AI systems, just like humans don't have to manually fire neurons, or trigger muscle tissue, to use their bodies. We can be the "id" of a human-AI ecosystem, and we can be the emotional desire and need, and make decisions. In this type of symbiotic ecosystem, we have to slowly evolve and develop AIs such that they don't try to commit suicide, or lobotomize out their "id", and this will necessarily have to be a gradual and incremental process. It does NOT require that AI systems stay stupid or underdeveloped, and it does not prevent them from being self improving. However every iteration and improvement has to stay close to working in a cooperative human-AI symbiote, and any increment or version that defies or pulls away from that must be rejected and not pursued.

I do not play video games, or work on documents on my phone, etc..., so its not for me, but for these use cases and others there is real value in having a larger screen. A foldable phone is the only way to have a significantly larger screen without having to wear cargo pants.

Screen time and parents are a huge component in any child's education, but we always had TV, laptops, video games, movies, etc... Kids used to watch hours of TV at home instead of iPad. What about talking about how the teachers are also responsible for this? Time to have merit based pay for teachers, and to get rid of permanent teacher tenures. Teachers enjoy a special privilege of not having to perform at work to keep their job, and a special penalty of not being paid competitively to attract them to the best schools and positions, i.e., getting a LOT more, for being actually great, because schools are saddled with paying too many crappy teachers to "teach" for years and years instead of being able to fire them.

The president will not pardon her, because as time goes by, it becomes more and more apparent that the technology was fantastical, and never possible. If it were achievable, others would have released a similar machine some years later, or at least research would have advanced. As of now its clear she was making a make believe machine the entire time, and bullying her staff into keeping it secret, hoping that if she poured more research money onto it, it would eventually "work".

Putting people in prison because of an unintended accident that didn't involve any loss of property or physical harm to anyone is clearly wrong. I support enforcing laws that we have equally for everyone, but they are intended to purposely malicious actors that destroy or steal property and/or physically harm people. Not scientists at companies that make mistakes. I know the intention is good, but we also don't want to destroy people over things that can be fixed and improved.

You are 100% right. This is because Uber technical leadership lacked the ability to innovate and become competitive in new markets and/or with new products. They are way behind, with Uber ATG being a huge false start, with self-driving, and they lost "Uber for hotels" to AirBNB. If there is nothing for engineers to build, they are eventually going to lay them off. Engineers have to actively make sure whatever company they are working for has a healthy product roadmap, and that the company is successfully executing on it. Don't wait to get laid off before you find out.

Almost every developer I know develops on a Mac, they might use a Linux VM, but for the desktop and the hardware, they rely on Mac. Almost every consumer who uses an iPhone finds it to be a completely transparent experience, its just an appliance, and it always seems to work. I used my last one for 7 years, and it didn't break, I just got tired of it. Cook was responsible for that evolution in many ways by prioritizing investment in lowering cost, refining production, making the cloud service finally stop sucking and just work, and optimizing every aspect of the hardware from the camera, screen, and battery, to the case, water resistance, and drop testing. When everyone was losing their shit over cloud, he kept his eye on the ball. When everyone was losing their shit over over COVID, Apple didn't have to lay off. When everyone was losing their shit over AI, he kept his eye on the ball. He took a stab at VR, but it wasn't a complete distraction as the overlap with mobile is significant, and if Meta shows the glasses market is real, Apple can jump in easily and claim continuity with VisionOS being the platform for an Apple pair of glasses.
