Comment HVAC first (Score 0) 88

Well I think its a great step.
But the HVAC needs to be efficent too (maybe more so) . It would make significant improvements to the energy use if the cooling systems were slightly smarter and the build design took it into account, add solar power to that and its a winner.

Sharks Seen Swimming Down Australian Streets 210

As if the flood waters weren't bad enough for the people of Queensland, it now appears that there are sharks swimming in the streets. Two bull sharks were spotted swimming past a McDonald’s in the city of Goodna, Butcher Steve Bateman saw another making its way past his shop on Williams street. Ipswich councillor for the Goodna region Paul Tully said: "It would have swam several kilometres in from the river, across Evan Marginson Park and the motorway. It’s definitely a first for Goodna, to have a shark in the main street."

Comment Re:If you run a blackberry check out BBSSH! (Score 1) 359

I agree, just started using bbsh and its great.

I am lumbered with a BB torch, now. One of thos annoying BBs with a small and recessed keyboard and I am about 2 hours away from switching back to my Bold 9000.

The vpn into the BES network is excellent for sysadmins allows access to internal URLs too so I can get to my nagios/cacti/RT interfaces as well as those for the networking kit and anything else with a webui
I can do a decent amount of troubleshooting and repairs from my BB and if I can't fix it with it I know what I have to fo by the time I get to my PC or into the office.

Even with the hours of wasted time talking to the Telco when they screw up the BES plan every 6-12 months (Optus) these have saved me countless hours and trips into the office.

Should Colleges Ban Classroom Laptop Use? 804

theodp writes "If you were a college prof, think you could successfully compete for the attention of a lecture hall of Mac-packing students? CS student Carolyn blogs that a debate has sprung up on her campus about whether it is acceptable to use a laptop in class. And her school is hardly alone when it comes to struggling with appropriate in-classroom laptop use (vendor/corporate trainers would no doubt commiserate). The problem, she says, is that the OCD Facebookers aren't just devaluing their own education — there's a certain distraction factor to worry about. 'Students,' she suggests, 'should also communicate with each other more and tell their classmates when their computer use bothers them. I'll admit it, when I'm trying to pay attention to the lecture, even someone's screensaver in the row ahead of me can be a major distraction.'"
