I'm disheartened to notice that...

Nobody mentioned the security or system requirement aspects...

I am not perfect (hence I am hanging out on slashdot today...) but here's what I'd do...

1.) Evaluate the hardware requirements of the machines I have available to me.

2.) Figure out if any of the old stuff has security vulnerabilities to rule out using it.

3.) If an older app has no vulnerabilities, the next critria should be forward compatibility with file types.

4.) Hence, because of #3, new (F)OSS stuff may end up winning the argument, unless the new (F)OSS stuff bogs down the machines compared to the old proprietary stuff (see step #1)
