I agree with you, I think a lot of Trumpism will pass, the long term damage is baked in now. Rightfully so, many of our allies twice now had been put on the back burner because we elected Trump. There won't be a third time, ALL of our allies and partners are already looking for or already made new agreements with other countries. That isn't something that we can easily come back from, Trump is in the process of making the US irrelevant in the global market as well as screwing up our lives here.

COBOL as well as mainframes is a very complex language and has quite a few unique features that will make it very difficult to just recode. I worked for many years creating code to migrate mainframe COBOL to Java on UNIX/Windows. I have no doubt they will recode it, but without extensive testing, I wouldn’t trust that code at all. I also don’t trust that they haven’t slipped a backdoor into the code. I really can’t believe we are allowing someone that unelected and lied to get their citizenship to run our country (into the ground).

They did the correct thing here. If they provided a backdoor, it was only a matter of time before that backdoor was discovered and exploited and they would be liable for the damages caused by that breach. In this case they are removing the encryption all together so there is no backdoor for anyone to breach. I would love for there to be a way for the "good guys" to have access to the "bad guy's" data only, but there is virtually no way to provide that without exposing everyone else's data and give them a false sense of security.
