Maybe the earth and mars were one planet(AKA "Pangea") about 3.5 billion years ago when a giant asteroid(AKA the moon) hit "Pangea" and knocked the mars part back. Thus our continents started shifting again, and the dinosaurs could no longer survive with a smaller planet.
It would then make sense that America accidentally gave New Zeland a chunk of fossilized wood brought back from the moon. It could also explain our planet's weird rotation and why the moon doesn't rotate while it orbits us.
