Many of the self checks can sense that there are more that one book (EM security involve). Good ones will refuse to check out any of them, if the setting isn't turned off. many libraries turn it off in a tradeoff of staff time/patron frustration vs losing a few books.
As for RFID, that is true theater. VERY simple to beat compared to EM, since the large tags are easily visible, simple to disable (cut them in half) and have a limited lifespan in normal use.
