Comment Assads email wasn't hacked (Score 4, Informative) 231

It was just the dept staff. Looked like it was hacked through the webmail portal of mopa.gov.sy. The only thing of note was the exchange re the Barbara Walters visit. The Ministry of Presidential Affairs is basically his marketing department. Whilst one would hope they busted into this despots email, the truth is they did no such thing.

What Solar Equipment to Power Disaster Recovery? 84

MailtoDelete asks: "I work with a team that is involved with disaster recovery efforts after natural disasters, like Katrina. We have satellite based equipment that allows us to bring data connections up in devastated areas to help bring the infrastructure back online to serve the public. I have looked at the main networking equipment and determined that the power draw is usually low (about 50 watts) and was curious about the possibility of using a small solar setup to power the equipment rather than running a 8-10kw generator to do the same work (after all, fuel may be scarce). Can anyone suggest a good site or book that I can look into that would help me learn more about what equipment would best serve my purpose? There is a small business in town that does this sort of work, and they have suggested a 550 watt array with the controllers, etc for about $5100. Does this sound reasonable?"

Journal Journal: PS3 Controller Wins CES Best of Innovations Award for 2007.

Can they be serious?

The Wii controller must be considered more inovative than the new PS3 controller surely.
Did this involve alot of bribing? does anyone actually consider the PS3 controller more inovative than the Wii controller?

Submission + - analysis of warmest year ever

kpw10 writes: Dr. Jeff Masters from Wunderground has a great summary of this year's rather abnormal weather (his blog is the best source on the net for in-depth weather analysis). The post discusses some of the cyclical climate forces at work this year as well as compares this year's record temperatures to records from the past — there are some interesting differences particularly in the extent of northern hemisphere seeing record highs this year. From the article: "December's weather in the Northeast U.S. may have been a case of the weather dice coming up thirteen — weather not seen on the planet since before the Ice Age began, 118,000 years ago. The weather dice will start rolling an increasing number of thirteens in coming years, and an ice-free Arctic Ocean in summertime by 2040 is a very real possibility..."

Journal Journal: Did you notice what was missing in today's keynote?

While everyone is excited and talking about the products Steve Jobs announced today (the iPhone -- and I'm excited about it myself), nobody seems to be talking much about what wasn't announced: a new iLife Suite for 2007. iLife has been announced at MacWorld each of the last 3 years, and most people felt this was a slam-dunk prediction.

A 3D Printer On Every Desktop? 426

holy_calamity writes "Two Cornell researchers have designed an open source 3D printer that costs just $2,400. The self-assembly kit is part of what they call the Fab@Home project — they hope it will spark development of rapid prototyping for the consumer market in the same way the Altair 8800 did for personal computing in seventies." Here is a video showing a completed machine constructing a silicone bulb (16-MB WMV).
Update: 01/10 04:02 GMT by KD : The developers of this kit are at Cornell, not Carnegie Mellon University as the original post erroneously stated.

Submission + - First Look At Final OLPC Design

blackbearnh writes: "At the Consumer Electronics Show on Monday, AMD hosted a presentation of the final Industrial Prototype of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) XO Laptop. Linux Today has extensive reporting, including new photos and details about power consumption, networking details, and the logistics of distributing and servicing what will be the largest rollout of any computing platform in history, 5 million units in the first year. This will represent nearly a 10% increase in the total worldwide laptop production for 2007."

Journal Journal: The Religion Of Environmentalism 13

I just ran across an interesting piece of mail that caught my eye. The link is to a new documentary called "Mine Your Own Business" and relates how Greenpeace and otehr environmental activists are preventing poor nations from receiving foreign industrial investment in the form of new mines. This trailer does riff on the Inconvenient Truth (hard not to) bit so you shouldn't have much of a question as to where they are coming from.

A Fully Programmable Mobile Robot 86

paxmaniac writes "iRobot has announced Create: a new fully programmable mobile robot based on the Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner. People have been hacking the Roomba since the day it came out. Well, hacking just got a whole lot easier. A command module for the Create provides a programmable 8-bit Atmel micro controller, four DB-9 ports for your own sensors, and a number of sample programs that can be compiled and uploaded to the command module via USB. Botmag has more details and some cool applications. This looks like the perfect robotics platform for hobbyists, schools, and universities alike."
