When Google started, they were quoted and Sun E10K and a few giant Internet pipes. Somebody (Rubin?) said that just the Internet plan would wipe his budget.
So they started building their own servers using lots of consumer PC motherboards.
I would like to know why they removed the AC power supply and went with DC.
