Or you just run them on an OS that is wholly capable for that. Man! I love car analogies tonight. I can take my wife's (really, she won't let me replace it) 1988 Honda Accord off the road and go into the woods of Maine with it. Or, instead, I can take A BADASS TANK AND THE LEMMIWINKS ARMY! (Sorry but, well, it seemed fitting.) The idea is that you CAN use a server or workstation platform as a general home OS, after some tinkering AND IT WILL BE BADASS. Err, I do tend to like Microsoft products but I'm afraid your alternative is Ubuntu or sticking with XP if you can't stomach Vista..... or running Workstation 2008, WHICH IS AWESOME. Those rules? As a retired (sort of) admin? I likes 'em. Allowing TECHNICALLY CAPABLE people to install random stuff they found online and "needed?" I like that too. BUT I HATE WHEN YOU DAMN KIDS TRAMPLE MY GRASS! GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

Apparently, it all started when Intel's Chairman, Craig Barrett, called the OLPC "a $100 gadget." Whatever the reason, last night's 60 Minutes has Nicholas Negroponte claiming that for-profit Intel is dumping its Classmate PC -- offering it below cost -- on the same governments he's offering his not-for-profit OLPC. "Intel should be ashamed of itself," Nick Neg says, "It's just -- it's just shameless." Negroponte offers an Intel marketing document which outlined the shortcomings of the OLPC approach (compared to the Classmate PC) as "proof" of Intel's wrong-doings. True, says Barett taking credit for the document, "that's the way our business works." All this because the OLPC features an AMD processor? Maybe, but it sure sounds like sour-grapes to us. Assuming you buy into Negroponte's premise of supplying the world's poor with computers, then who really cares if the children use a computer spawned from monetary self-interest or (supposedly) altruistic motivations -- just as long as the kids can play Doom on something?

The Illegal Subset of the Integers writes: "According to Ars Technica, Congress has sent letters to 19 universities identified by the RIAA and MPAA has havens for copyright infringement. In it, they not only seek to discover what these universities are doing to dissuade students from infringing activities, but give the implied threat. House Judiciary Committee member Lamar Smith (R-TX) was quoted as saying, "If we do not receive acceptable answers, Congress will be forced to act." One wonders, though, what the universities are supposed to due when international disrespect for imaginary property rights is so widespread that there are currently over two million hits on Google for a certain oft-posted illegal number, up from the three hundred thousand hits from sometime yesterday."

Well it looks like that Intel has scrapped the idea of promoting the UMPC, in favor of a much smaller (and less capable) Mobile Internet Device (MID). The UMPC is now heading for a market niche, where it may be replacing the tablet PC as a mobile computer for field technicians. The MID takes on the role of the original UMPC concept, but it won't run Vista."
