Journal heliocentric's Journal: Take a Model Train to Work Day 11

Take a Model Train to Work Day has been set for this year and it will be on Friday, November 14, 2003. Falling in the midst of National Model Railroad Month, Take a Model Train to Work Day is an opportunity for model railroad enthusiasts of all types to share with others their love of model trains.

No, this doesn't mean you should change your commute habits and ride a tiny train to work; it means you should take with you a model train. Think of it like Take Your Daughter to Work Day, only with less people drooling over what you brought in.

So, those of you out there with just a passing interest in trains and/or model trains, now is your chance to prove to your co-workers that you are the weirdo nut-job they only suspect you are. Consider this JE an early warning so you may begin to think about how you will share your trains with others. Perhaps build something in your cube or maybe you can bore a hole in the cube wall and implement an HO caffeine delivery system to share between you and your co-workers.

UPDATE

Ok, so with the discussion mostly working around my idea for an HO beverage system I snapped two shots on my RR and posted them.

beer train and caffeine train

Even if I didn't like model trains I would applaud this idea!
    • Caffeine?

      No no no... b e e r .
      • Well, if you use gondola cars they could carry any sort of can-based container on them with ease (in HO-Scale). If you go with actual working tank-cars then you have to clean them and worry about cross-flavor contimation, unless you are into finding new things like Jolt flavored lager. But I think you could scale the system to any BEvERages you like, remember that with trains we can just make them longer to carry more selection in the cargo.

This would be the ideal situation, I think - otherwise it get *too* complicated. Now on the other hand, I think try to create some sort of cooling system to keep the beverages on the train cars cold would be worth troubling with. Something involving peltiers, and over-amped tracks...

How do you handle a nice hot steaming cup of coffee?
          • Hey, I open sourced the idea, you can extend it to your regional needs =)

The issue there is sealing the item since with any of these "High and Wide" freight items the car's center of gravity is much higher and more prone to tipping. The two things I showed are already in sealed containers so the worry is reduced.
  • i'm tiny, but i'm not THAT tiny!

oh, come on- somebody had to say it...

  • Would it be OK if instead I just hit my former boss upside the head with a model train?

Or would that get me in trouble with the Model Train Anti-Defamation League?

Maybe I'll just listen to John Coltrane all day.
Or maybe just a little Duke Ellington.
  • That's my birthday. Someone get me a train to take to work! Oh wait, I don't have a job : /

1 + 1 = 3, for large values of 1.
