You'd think so, but after conversations with PV solar installers it turns out that if the grid goes down you can't power your house during daylight without a battery system and disconnecting from the grid.

Some (many? most?)states have laws on the books protecting solar cells as well. I know that in Arizona and Utah an HOA can not ban you from putting up solar cells but they can restrict them to locations that don't deter views of other owners.

Eg surface of your roof = ok, in front of your neighbors dining room window = not ok.

Submission + - Forecaster Blasts Gore on Global Warming

MoWe writes: A top hurricane forecaster called Al Gore "a gross alarmist" Friday for making an Oscar-winning documentary about global warming. "He's one of these guys that preaches the end of the world type of things. I think he's doing a great disservice and he doesn't know what he's talking about," Dr. William Gray said in an interview with The Associated Press at the National Hurricane Conference in New Orleans, where he delivered the closing speech.

Submission + - Kids test theory of relativity in a mini-van

Matthew Sparkes writes: "Tom Van Baak and his three young children performed an impressive experiment on the theory of relativity. The group took a van equipped with 3 atomic clocks up Mount Rainier, near Seattle, for a couple of days camping. Because of the altitude, and therefore speed difference, they could calculate that there would be a time dilation of +22 nanoseconds between the two vans clocks, and some left at their house. If everyone's dad was like this then the world would be filled with theoretical physicists."

Submission + - The Sun, not Man, is Causing Global Warming

Sterling D. Allan writes: "There are plenty good reasons to go green. Global warming isn't one of them. A 76-minute documentary produced in England and published on YouTube destroys the arguments put forward by Al Gore and other activists who lay the primary blame for Global Warming at the feet of mankind. According to the documentary, CO2 historically lags earth mean temperatures by several hundred years. The lock-step relationship is between solar activity and earth temperatures. Man's contribution is puny in comparison. The earth has seen temperatures much warmer than today in previous cyclical periods."
