The Fastest ISPs In the US 168

adeelarshad82 writes "For a second year in a row PCMag partnered with Speedtest to find out the fastest ISPs in the U.S. The results were a product of 110,000 tests ran between January 1, 2012 and September 19, 2012. Collecting data for both download and upload speeds for each test, Speednet was able to calculate an index score for a better one-to-one comparison, where downloads counted for 80 percent and uploads 20 percent. Moreover, rather than testing the upload and download speed of a single file, the tests used multiple broadband threads to measure the total capacity of the 'pipe.' While the results at the nationwide level were fairly obvious with Verizon FiOS crushing its opposition, the results at regional level were a lot more interesting and competitive."

I have a free "feature" on my land line.
When a call comes in, my phone rings once. I then have about 10 seconds to reach the phone before the line goes dead. Most people I know have my cell number and usually try that one first. Anybody that does not have my cell number will keep trying until they reach me. Robocallers will try only once.
I keep forgetting to tell my telco about this problem, mostly because I work nights and I like my sleep during the day.

CERN Releases Analysis of LHC Incident 149

sash writes "From the fresh press release: 'Investigations at CERN following a large helium leak into sector 3-4 of the Large Hadron Collider tunnel have confirmed that cause of the incident was a faulty electrical connection between two of the accelerator's magnets. This resulted in mechanical damage and release of helium from the magnet cold mass into the tunnel. Proper safety procedures were in force, the safety systems performed as expected, and no one was put at risk. Sufficient spare components are in hand to ensure that the LHC is able to restart in 2009, and measures to prevent a similar incident in the future are being put in place.'"

Most forms of advertising support the media they go across. Junk Mail pays for the USPS. Comercials pay for the TV & Radio stations they are on. Banner Ads pay for websites. Magazines & newspapers are heavily subsidized by them. The only 2 types of push advertising that I can think of that do not are Telemarketing & spam. Neither one of them pays for the media they go across
