Journal handsomepete's Journal: Who the hell owns slashcache.(org|net|com)? 2

I just decided to see if anyone had registered this wonderful little phrase after the combined nonsense of this thread and the soon-to-be-infamous troll fodder Kuro5hin article "The Ethics of Linkage". The big three with that name are already registered. A ping forwards the request to www.blitzaffe.com. The contact for that site is blintzj@hotmail.com, which is also the contact for www.blinch.com, which is owned by Steve Blinch, who apparently owns esitemedia.com which, surprise surprise, looks just like those other two sites. Man, I hate Flash. It also might be the biggest waste of bandwidth. Ever.

So, what's the point of this journal? I dunno. I guess I thought someone was going to actually step up and start mirroring content for slashdot since the editors won't do it, but maybe he's just squatting. I wonder how much mirroring slashdotted content would cost to run.... probably a lot more than I have.

Feel free to comment.

Edit: The person in question pointed out to me that he doesn't use any Flash, so I stand corrected.

    I do.

I'm not sure what you were looking at, but none of those three sites look even remotely similar.

    Man, I hate Flash.
Uhh... try again. I do not use Flash, nor have I ever. Did you even visit the sites, or are you just making this up as you go?

I guess I thought someone was going to actually step up and start mirroring content for slashdot since the editors won't do it, but maybe he's just squatting.
slashcache.org clearly states that the site is under development. There are no ads, no "click here to buy this domain", nothing of that sort. And yet you assume I'm just squatting on the domain?

Here's an idea, bud - why don't you put your money where your mouth is? Step up and write an effective caching solution overnight. Hell, I'll give you until next week. If you can solve the Slashdot effect by then, I'll hand over the domains to you, free of charge.

Just FYI, I am indeed actively working on the site. I'm not interested in launching the site until it's done, and yes, it is taking a long time. That's because there are an awful lot of whiners (like yourself, apparently), but very few individuals who want to step up and help out.

And no, I will not be simply mirroring every Slashdotted site on our server - the bandwidth costs would put us out of business in a few days. We've already tried out several different options (and rejected most of them), and we're currently investigating the viability of a P2P caching solution.

And one last thing - why not just click on the logo at slashcache.org to send me an E-mail, rather than ranting away here in your journal? I would have been happy to answer your questions, and it would have saved you the trolling you did here.
    • It's not like anyone actually reads my journal anyways, but you sure do get defensive easily.

I'm not sure what you were looking at, but none of those three sites look even remotely similar.

They do to me,,, if anything, they've got a very similar style and feel. So what?

Alright, I'm sorry I'm sorry. I did look at the sites, but just skimmed them. I got tricked by the loading bar, slowness, and look of the pages (they have they weird tiny font that reminds me of flash - at least in Mozilla.) I apologize for associating you with the crappiest thing in the world.

Welp, until just recently, that's all it said was "Under development," which doesn't exactly scream "I'm being utilized!" That doesn't mean anything. Having that informational page up there makes it much more clear that you're actually doing something with the domain. Moreover, I don't particularily give a shit what you're doing with it. Other than taking some cheap shots at your websites (which someone who's in the business of making websites should be able to handle), this journal really had nothing to do with you (assuming it is actually you and you're not trolling my journal). That's why I didn't email you. That's why I'm not claiming to have any magical solutions (which I imagine is far more of a daunting task than this tiny perl book on my desk could provide)... it's because I don't really care outside of thinking that it's an interesting topic of discussion. Buy slashd0t.org and make it a pirate fan site. Turn it into a midget porn site for all I care, really. Maybe I'll even buy a subscription. I would never expect anyone to actually try and take on the ridiculous task of mirroring all this crap, and I definitely wasn't whining or bitching. If someone does, incuding slashdot themselves, it's a big huge gift. Geez.

If you're going to work on anything that involves the ridiculously finicky slashdot crowd, you might want to get some thicker skin. No offense intended.

For the record, if you need any help that's not related to writing piles and piles of perl/C/(insert language here), I'll gladly put in some of my free time.
