Well, lets see now. Our IBM mainframe has gone over four years without an unplanned outage. There were two planned outages, both to upgrade the hardware. That took about two hours each. The CE unplugged the old box, plugged in the new box and we IPLd (That's a BOOT to you!) No OS or apps changes required. We run 24x6. The operators get Sunday off but the systems are still up in case any workaholic programmers want to work that day too!

We are a fast growing company and kept outgrowing our processor. The model we have now has all the processors installed already. If we need more power we just pay IBM some more money and they turn another one on. Zero downtime!

BTW, a staff of 400 in two offices is small potatoes. The previous company I was at had 2500+ employees scattered around the world, plus several wholly owned subsidiaries and they were all served by one old dinosaur. They replaced it with *two* huge HP systems and had to farm out everything that didn't require RT/OL access. Of course the IT staff took it in the shorts because of the conversion costs and "failure".

And so it goes.
