I always found Avira Antivir personal edition very very good for detections. relatively lightweight but it does come with a nag window every once in a blue moon which can easily be turned off.
It isn't easy being the parent of a six-year-old. However, it's a pretty small price to pay for having somebody around the house who understands computers.
