Comment Re:Short rant about e-books. (Score 1) 259

Fact is, e-books are an outrageous scam, by any measure.

If people are willing to pay for them, how is it a "scam"? It's not like anyone is being tricked -- it's a voluntary exchange of money for a (digital) good between two parties. If I'm willing to pay $10 for a book, why wouldn't I be willing to pay $10 for the ability to read that book in a more convenient (for me) format? Just because the marginal cost of production is low doesn't make me benefit any less from it.

Submission + - New investment strategy: investment in lawsuits? (nytimes.com) 1

guga31bb writes: Could this be the next wave of investment? "Juris typically invests $500,000 to $3 million in a case, Mr. Desser said. He would not identify the company's backers, but said that 'on the portfolio as a whole, our returns are well in excess of 20 percent per year.' He added, 'We're certainly beating the market.'"

Comment Re:No phones? (Score 2, Interesting) 504

I agree with the parent for the most part (I also have a single cell phone). Talking on the phone is one of my least favorite activities - I am extremely awkward on the phone and it's generally inefficient (reading an email or text message is much faster than needing to talk to someone). Also, voice mail is a hassle.

HOWEVER, there are always times I need it.
-Picking up my wife from somewhere, if one of us needs to change the schedule
-Meeting up with people (I know, I know, social activities...)
-More generally, if I'm not at home (no internet access) and need to contact someone
-My parents enjoy talking over the phone

So while I would love a phone-less world, I don't see it happening (for me) anytime soon.

2009, Year of the Linux Delusion 696

gadgetopia writes "An article has come out claiming (yet again) that 2009 will be the year of Linux, and bases this prediction on the fact that low-power ARM processors will be in netbooks which won't have enough power to run Windows, but then says these new netbooks will be geared to 'web only' applications which suits Linux perfectly. And, oh yeah, Palm might save Linux, too." The article goes on to skewer the year of Linux thing that seems to show up on pretty much every tech news site throughout December and January as lazy editors round out their year with softball trolling stories and "Year End Lists." We should compile a year-end list about this :)
