It's the slow march to unification across macOS/iOS/tvOS. Last major update they made "zoom" take the window full-screen in its own space by default. This major, they move towards apps grouping documents under the same window. Next major they improve spaces support (potentially making an application space run in a window), then they've migrated the window-based-paradigm into an app-based-paradigm (like iOS and tvOS). iOS apps already support flexible sizing since iOS 9 to enable this. Once applications can (optionally) support multiple input methods (touch / mouse / keyboard), all new apps are already using the same underlying tech (CloudKit, UIKit, etc.) across all apple OSes, and iOS apps bytecode format already runs on macOS. Respect to them for exercising restraint toward unification to let their users catch up, as opposed to going too far too fast (windows 8) and alienating everyone, but yes some people will still be alienated. No one can argue "system integrity" AKA Rootless doesn't improve security, but it can't be argued it doesn't disable some use cases.

More realism in consequences will only come with greater realism in controls. Once you're truly "in the game" can you deal with "in the game" realism.

The only air conditioning currently provided is a single duct pipe from one of two air conditioner units. I was thinking of stealing air from the second air conditioning unit with some sheet metal work, but it likely will not be sufficient — and would not have tolerance for both AC units being offline for any amount of time. An ideal supplemental portable AC unit is what I am after, however I'm finding it cost prohibitive, with $600+ humidity controlled AC unit, plus 20 amp socket requirement, plus contract work to make a hole in the wall for outside drainage so that the unit does not flood the place. What sort of successful cheaper air conditioning solutions have you come up with?"

I've recently written a tool that enables Firefox users (along with IE7 or other OpenSearch compat. browsers) to post directly to Twitter from their browser's search bar. This used to be easy but earlier this year Twitter changed some things server-side that disabled this functionality. I liked it, so I re-created it using the official API. It's available here for anyone to use.

The article includes features like modularized OS, new UAC, program caching, standards compliant browser and a whole lot more with explanations as to why these features should be included. With Windows Vista only receiving a luke-warm reception, Microsoft needs to make sure Windows 7 is a winner from the get go." What other features would you suggest to Microsoft if they are to have a hope for recovery?

The Japanese robot is intended to act as a personal sommelier, suggesting wines, cheeses, and hors d'oeuvres based on its owners personal tastes. It also apparently thinks humans would be tasty as part of a sandwich." From the article: "Let the robot holocaust commence: robots think we taste like bacon ... Upon being given a sample, he will speak up in a childlike voice and identify what he has just been fed. The idea is that wineries can tell if a wine is authentic without even opening the bottle, amongst other more obscure uses ... like 'tell me what this strange grayish lump at the back of my freezer is/was.' But when some smart aleck reporter placed his hand in the robot's omnivorous clanking jaw, he was identified as bacon. A cameraman then tried and was identified as prosciutto." This is most distressing.

Slashdot Posting Bug Infuriates Haggard Admins 262

Last night we crossed over 16,777,216 comments in the database. The wise amongst you might note that this number is 2^24, or in MySQLese an unsigned mediumint. Unfortunately, like 5 years ago we changed our primary keys in the comment table to unsigned int (32 bits, or 4.1 billion) but neglected to change the index that handles parents. We're awesome! Fixing is a simple ALTER TABLE statement... but on a table that is 16 million rows long, our system will take 3+ hours to do it, during which time there can be no posting. So today, we're disabling threading and will enable it again later tonight. Sorry for the inconvenience. We shall flog ourselves appropriately. Update: 11/10 12:52 GMT by J : It's fixed.

IT and Divorce? 943

For my graduate thesis I am writing a paper about Dads who work in the computer industry, divorce and custody. I think our industry causes a high rate of divorce but I need some help from the Slashdot community. My questions are: How many of you computer Dads have also gone through divorce and have retained either half or full custody of your children? Do you think your job had something to do with it? What were some of your hardest challenges and are your kids happy?"
