Comment "Music" meaning what? (Score 4, Insightful) 101

The definition of what music is has changed over time to patterned pieces of noise that can be generated by programming. No complexity, no inspiration, no art anymore. And we wonder it can be generated by a tool that excels in automating pattern-based generation?

Diminishing the scope of what humans can do does not mean tools become human-like, just that people become tools.

Comment The narcissistic wars (Score 1) 75

So. The unavoidably narcissistic reddit moderators, who found themselves as gods at the top of the posting fooodchain, ban narcissistic types who think discovered the gods of AI. The article is right. It does look like they are all under the spell of “ego-reinforcing glazing-machines that reinforce unstable and narcissistic personalities."

Comment THIS is dangerous (Score 5, Insightful) 46

Implying so casually that there is a valid concept called "dangerous knowledge" is the actual, true danger. There is no such thing, not in the free world. Or otherwise... Welcome to the USSR.

Seeing this mentality here on what used to be a liberal tech forum is scary and outrageous at the same time.

Comment Given the speed of publishing in academia... (Score 1) 34

In short, the models they test in the paper are basically ancient history.

Comment So, honest competitors don't count? (Score 1) 40

Does this mean that the university believes fairness and equity is acquired by punishing honest competitors because others have cheated? This is what they did by cancelling the entire competition. They weren't able to organize it properly, and instead of investigating fraud in a responsible manner, they chickened out. The victims, as always, not the university staff.

Is this the university's new way of advertising their values?

Comment Hope that helps (Score 2) 80

I hope the accolades themselves will solve the energy problem in Germany, a country that started by shutting down on purpose all its nuclear plants, became dependent on Russian gas, and now imports electricity made by its neighbors with nuclear, gas and coal.

Because as with all fusion tech we've seen, the actual question is whether it really works in the real world. The track record is not encouraging.

Comment Yes, the employer has this right (Score 1) 149

I get the comments saying that the employer has this right, and once they say you should go to work, you definitely have to.

However, there is a more profound problem here: the inability of high-level managers to understand that work paradigms do change, and their obsession with control and the old ways is not always the best way. A lot of jobs, especially in software, can be easily and very often more efficiently done remotely, with a lot of advantages for both parties. The pandemic lock-downs proved this without any doubt, and ignoring the new reality is simply stupid. Of course they can enforce their ways, especially in corporations as big and centralized as Amazon. Others will not. To each their own.

But this is a real thing, and that's why this article is indeed news worth publishing.

Comment This is unwarranted hubris (Score 1) 302

The only valid metric that tells your job is useful is that somebody gives you money for it. Of course many feel their job is useless or unfulfilling, but fellings alone are irrelevant. Somebody needs that work, pays you for it so that job is necessary, and far from being "bulshit". Saying that about jobs, and creating "bs job categories" only shows excessive amounts of hubris and condescending hate towards those who work and provide value to the society, while they don't necessarily enjoy the process.

Anyway, if feelings are that important, I suspect many will strongly feel that this kind of study is actually the real bulshit.
