I was in the same situation as the person asking this question. I have a digital video projector connected to a PS3. I thaught it would be fun to see what free over the air terrestrial HD TV broadcasts looked like. One of the hardest parts was finding a decent video converter box that had a HDMI connector. All the ones on Amazon seem to have been discontinued. The ones being made now for the $40 coupons don't have either digital output or HD output. All current video monitors come with digital tuners built in so there is not much market for HD TV converters any more.

A few years ago things were different. The HD video monitors all had external tuners and there were several to choose from. I decide to buy a used one on eBay. This worked out fairly well. People are upgrading their old monitors and receivers to new ones with tuners built in so the used tuners are available for sale. I think I paid about $60 for mine. It is a Digital Stream 3150plus. It works but it is not great. At least it has HDMI.

My best hope for the future is that Sony will eventually release a digital tuner for the Playstation 3 that turns it into a digital TV recorder. They have one in Europe already. Currently the total lack of external HD tuners sucks for those of us that have video projectors and don't want to get reamed by satellite or cable companies for HD video. The over the air is higher quality and free. As far as I know it doesn't even have DRM.
