There are lots of reasons for telnet to still exist. Its the rawest sending protocol in existence. Mostly as a client more than a server daemon. But the concerns about telnet are more noise than actual events. The MUDs have proven that for decades. On the other hand, I would never recommend that it be defaulted to "on" in any server install. Even if attempts at it are so rare that its almost a good choice for that first 20 minutes of being online. Since most attacks are now against ssh, ftp, web, dns, etc etc its probably just as good an idea not to have any of them turned on by default. Let the person turn them on one at a time when they are ready to immeadiately put time into patching and hardening it. The best option for an installer might be to allow the person to select a protocol, and an unusual port for it, then switch to it for further setup of the install. Gandalf Parker
