On the user side, the UF Help Desk also provides basic computer support for Linux (and other platforms, of course) wherever possible. They offer a walk in laptop service and will try their best to help you with whatever problems you may be having, including the installation process if need be. We used to have a fair number of issues with various portions of our WebCT/Blackboard based online system which made using it on linux kind of a pain (spotty java version support in the system). However, I've been led to believe that we're migrating to the open source Sakai Project... so those days may be behind us.

It sounds to me like the suit is over the fact that the OLPC might have implemented an open source driver for the konyin keyboards. If these keyboards are popular in Nigeria, that would make a good deal of sense.

It would also mean that this lawsuit is even more frivolous that most people are assuming it is. Reverse engineering for interoperability is, I believe, a legally sanctioned action.

Submission + - Storm worm more powerful than top supercomputers

Stony Stevenson writes: Security researchers who are tracking the burgeoning network of Microsoft Windows machines that have been compromised by the virulent Storm worm, are saying it has now grown so massive and far-reaching that it easily overpowers the world's top supercomputers.

"In terms of power, the botnet utterly blows the supercomputers away," said Matt Sergeant, chief anti-spam technologist with MessageLabs, in an interview. "If you add up all 500 of the top supercomputers, it blows them all away with just 2 million of its machines. It's very frightening that criminals have access to that much computing power, but there's not much we can do about it." Sergeant said researchers at MessageLabs see about 2 million different computers in the botnet sending out spam on any given day, and he adds that he estimates the botnet generally is operating at about 10 percent of capacity.

Submission + - HCI blogger discusses the widspread misuse of mice

An anonymous reader writes: Recently launched blog "The New Interface Advocate," has an entry about how mice are being applied to situations they are intrinsically poorly suited for. It also has an interesting proposal for how to keep most of the current paradigm of GUIs and still take advantage of the other control devices, such as the keyboard.
