Looking at an old FAQ on the fire:

7) Q: How many coal mine fires are there in the US?
A: The Federal Abandoned Mine Lands Inventory System (AMLIS) lists 241 coal mine
fires in the US

If they are going to let them burn, someone should be trying to extract heat / power from them. Not really any homes left to heat in Centralia but maybe steam turbines or something.

I agree that it is likely harder to make money on the ride-share side of things but food delivery pays decent. There are a lot of people here in Salem, OR that drive full time and they love it. There would be an advantage to driving an EV but not a huge one. I pay about $13/day for gas for my 2020 Accent. I made $58k last year driving full-time. I had a $22739 mileage deduction. The tax savings easily covers the gas and maintenance. It's only a $16k car so I don't sweat the depreciation too much. It's a business cost that I have to eat but it's not a large one.

Yes, the whole mistreatment thing is complete BS. It's a good flexible job with good pay and great tax write offs. Another thing that that is BS is that we don't get health insurance. The rules on the health exchange have changed and right now there is a special open enrollment. I qualified for a Kaiser plan that starts at the beginning of the month. Because the exchange looks at income after business deductions, my $57k gig pay looks like $34k. I get a $499 a month Premium Tax Credit making my premiums $2.39 a month. Beat that.

It can be a full-time job. As I have posted before, I made over $57k last year as a full-time driver. I also get some nice deductions so that my federal tax for the year was only $6200 on 57k. By my choice, I work 6 days a week about 8-9 hours a day. You won't get rich at it but it's not as bad as people will have you think.

I made $58k last year delivering food. I usually work 6 days a week, 8-9 hours a day but it's completely up to me. I have 3 delivery apps running at once for lots of offers but it's my choice whether to accept or decline any offer. My acceptance rate is only around 10%. I only take the higher paying, short distance offers. With the mileage, standard, SE tax and QBI deductions, I only paid $6200 federal tax on $58k. I was not taken advantage of. I bought a new car. What scares me is this constant buzz that we are being exploited when it's not the case. Government is going to come in with their usual ham-fisted, tunnel-vision way of doing things and screw this up for me and a lot of other people. They are going to turn this into a part-time Dominoes job and I am going to be living in my car.
