The problem with this approach is that the coder is not typically the subject matter expert, nor would you want them to be.
When you have coders determining the direction of your application, you run the risk of their tunnel vision affecting the usability of your application. They are typically out of touch with the end users needs, and add features that are technically or visually appealing, but have a negative impact on the end user's experience.
