Journal glh's Journal: Poll: What are you doing for Hallmark ^H^H^H Valentines day? 16
Before proceeding, please check out this funny Valentines link.
OK, so I'm usually not particularly fond of V-day. Mainly because Valentines day is a made up holiday for the purpose none other than money grubbing companies like hallmark to make a quick buck.
In grade school it was fun. Everyone had a valentines day bag and usually got something. In high school and middle school it was pretty depressing for various reasons, especially if you weren't in the cool groups. In college it was a lot of fun- we made a tradition of going to Damons and choked down a "mother loaf" of onion rings and generally gassed up. At least, if we didn't have a real date..
Anyway, things are different this year as I will be taking my wife out to a nice restaraunt so I guess I'm betraying my principles. Last year we both agreed not to do anything ahead of time for V-day so we wouldn't feel pressured.
Now on to the poll...
1. What do you like and hate most about Valentines day?
2. Are you "celebrating" it this year? (If so, what are your plans)
3. Have you given or recieved any valentine cards/candy/etc. yet (or are you planning to)?
4. Are you someones secret valentine / is someone your secret valentine (is there anyone you want to give a card to but are too shy, or anyone you hope to get a card from)?
5. What is your most memorable valentines day?

I proposed in February about 4 years ago, we had been dating for about 7 months. I tried to do it on my dad's birthday so I could easily remember the date. We ended up doing a re-enactment of one of our first dates (actually, it wasn't really a date but the first time we were alone together if that makes sense). Afterward I cooked her dinner, took her to my town house, played a song I wrote (I had recorded it on CD) busted out the ring (had it hidden in the couch) and proposed.

3.) No and no
4.) Nope
5.) I don't have a favorite Valentines. Sorry to sound so pathetic. I'm not in a sad mood or anything, just that Valentines days don't stick in my memory (mostly cause its a hallmark holiday, not something special like Christmas)
Re:Celebrating (Score:2)
The funny thing was, neither one of us were really interested in dating (period). I was planning on going for an overseas mission trip, and she was planning on going to Africa for an environmental thing. Needless to say things changed pretty quick! When you know you know..
Ironically, her best friend at the time started dating one of my good friends about 2 months after us. They were calling us "cheetas" because we were already talking about marriage. Anyway, they ended up getting engaged about a month BEFORE us.. got married 2 months before us, and already have a 1 year old!!
I am glad we got married when we did. My only thought is that our first year might have been a little easier had we known each other longer.

Dated from late '94 until summer of '95. Fall of '95 until Fall of '96. Winter of '96-'97 until marriage. Engaged November 2nd 1998. There was another split somewhere in there, but I'll be damned if I can remember when it was.
-1. What do you like and hate most about Valentines day?
Like most: nifty candy. An entire bag of only cherry tootsie pops.
Hate most? Nothing. Life is too short to hate a stupid holiday.

Nope.

-5. What is your most memorable valentines day?
Okay, I acutally do remember one. 2/14/2000. Angie was scheduled for a conference with her principal and someone from higher up in the county. I got her a stuffed animal and gave it to her in the parking lot. Turns out the meeting was essentially to put the hood over her head (the execution was a few weeks later). Yeah, no wonder we don't like Valentine's Day around here.

As to the other, I don't think so. Well, I think you can see it from 79, although we usually come in on 422 (it's easier that way from here). I'm not sure whether it's what you describe or not, because neither campers or RVs are allowed at the event I'm talking about. In other words, no, it's not an "open grass area full of campers and RVs," it's a crowded grass/trees area full of tents. If you know where the 422 auto auction place (that's always full of school buses) is, it's on Currie Road (goes crosswise from 422 at the 422 Auto Auction), back in behind there.

In 1975 February 13th I hatched (or was found under a rock, depends on who you ask). I like this time of year because I get to celebrate my birthday. Nowadays, it isn't a big deal.
What I hate about valentines is that it is a tribute to marketing and pressure guys feel to "declare their love" to their SOs. I do that each and every day, don't give me a "special" day to do it.
2. Are you "celebrating" it this year? (If so, what are your plans)
No. Probably cook a nice dinner at home, but that's pretty common anyway. Might celebrate my birthday a little. Who knows?
3. Have you given or recieved any valentine cards/candy/etc. yet (or are you planning to)?
No. Don't plan to.
4. Are you someones secret valentine / is someone your secret valentine (is there anyone you want to give a card to but are too shy, or anyone you hope to get a card from)?
No. Might be kinda fun. My luck I'd get the local troll-beast though.

Probably 1996 when I turned 21. So young dumb and drunk I don't remember much of it.

I don't like anything about it. I've never had a girl on Valentines, so its always been a drag. All the love makes me sick.

I usually buy myself a lot of chocolate and stay at home, holed up in the basement watching Say Anything... [imdb.com] and crying. Then I top off the evening by listening to Starflyer 59's "Gold" album and complaining on IRC with all the other losers. But this year I'm going to see Daredevil and going bowling with my friend, like a good dateless geek. Just so we don't look gay, he invited one of his chick friends. Who knows, maybe I'll hit it off with her. (This is very unlikely.)
Have you given or recieved any valentine cards/candy/etc. yet (or are you planning to)?
My mom usually gives me one, as a does my grandma. Other then that, not since gradeschool.
Are you someones secret valentine / is someone your secret valentine (is there anyone you want to give a card to but are too shy, or anyone you hope to get a card from)?
There is a girl I'm into, but I'm too shy to do anything about it. Heck, I've never talked to her - I don't even know her name - so chances of getting a valentine from her are slim.

3. Have you given or recieved any valentine cards/candy/etc. yet (or are you planning to)?
Yes. I gave peanut butter cups and chocolate kisses to the individuals in my sorority. It's a very easy way to make people just a bit cheerier for a while.
