Journal glh's Journal: .GNU - competitor to .NET using C# 4

Just thought some of you out there might be interested in DotGNU, a competitor to MS's .NET. I think it is cool that another company (Mono being the other one) is creating a Linux version of the C# compiler. Here is a link to a project under DotGNU (DotGNU Portable.NET). It looks like it is actually pretty far along. One can currently compile simple C# programs on windows and run them with the "ilrun" tool on Linux! Cool stuff.

Anyway, I first heard about these sites from an interesting article on zdnet about how .NET will "conquer the world" (maybe a slight over statement, but I think they may be on to something). :)

Regardless, this will be some interesting stuff for my ".NET news" segment in the UG meeting tonight.

  • I was interested to note that it uses XML-RPC

I have been thinking about getting that O'Reilleys book about it.

Any opinions from people who know more about distributed stuff?
  • You have a neverwinternights module where you host your user's group meeting? That's pretty cool.

But... There are only Windows clients so far?

    • I've never actually played never winter nights.. sounds like fun though. Didn't know nwnug was also a module in that :) That's a pretty good play on words..

      • It was pretty fun, but just one character and a henchman kinda sucks. And the modules I saw a few months ago were horrible. I'd go check some of the newer ones, but my interest has waned.
