A lot is situational. But what's easier to take a pill or uproot yourself from career and/or living space and/or social group? People are lazy and drugs give us an excuse to keep being lazy. (similarly if one was less lazy and more active or hard working or somehting he or she maybe less depressed?)

Any environmental impact no matter how large (or in this case small) isn't going to stop technology. WE've been moving oil slicks and copper deposits for the entirity of our species. Making a human more comfortable and easing his or her physical burden in the short term will trump every other facet to human nature (see also: ego). Don't read too much into it.

It's more then only the technology industry that's bloated and churning out products that are overbuilt and useless. I've been complaining about it for years. It could be more apparent in technology fields, though, assuming the primary motivator for the product is to replace a human's physical labor. As the code gets written and its automation implemented then less people are required.

The whole company always seemed a little too cunning, if you know what I mean, like hucksters, or shysters, used car salesmen, gasbag gossips, politicians without a program (see also: middle management).

Once upon a time when it was only a search engine web page, they wanted to be like the anti-Microsoft. They stood for the little guy in opposition to the Microsoft corporate behemoth. Then it turned into some kinda multi-tentacled Lovecraftian advertising creature. It's so much worse than Microsoft; hypocritical, chaotic, vapid.
