writes: The BBC is reporting that Professor Donald Michie and his ex-wife Anne McLaren were killed in a car which left the motorway as they travelled from Cambridge to London.
Donald Michie was a researcher in artificial intelligence who worked in Bletchley Park during WW2. Dr McLaren was a leading geneticist and the first woman officer of the Royal Society.
"Necessity is the mother of invention" is a silly proverb. "Necessity
is the mother of futile dodges" is much nearer the truth.
