SolarPHP is an application framework and library, and is a serious contender alongside Zend Framework, Symphony, and similar frameworks. klaasb writes "North Korea's self-developed computer operating system, named 'Red Star,' was brought to light for the first time by a Russian satellite broadcaster yesterday. North Korea's top IT experts began developing the Red Star in 2006, but its composition and operation mechanisms were unknown until the internet version of the Russia Today TV program featured the system, citing the blog of a Russian student who goes to the Kim Il-sung University in Pyongyang."

Ah. I see "32-bit host operating systems". Here's the quote from the VirtualBox manual:

In particular, 64-bit guests are supported under the following conditions:
1. You need a 64-bit processor with hardware virtualization support (see chapter
1.2, Software vs. hardware virtualization (VT-x and AMD-V), page 11).

That's an artificial limitation, too. Sun proved you can run 64bit operating systems and virtual machines on 32bit CPUs.

Huh? Since when did Sun prove this?

Obviously it's slower, though, since 64bit operating systems assume the existence of some speed-enhancing CPU features.

You mean like the existence of a 64-bit CPU?

Netflix Throttling Instant Video Streaming 207

rsk writes "For the last few weeks I've been experiencing terrible streaming video performance from Netflix on both my Xbox 360 and PC. While my Xbox 360 would at least stream at a lower resolution, my PC cannot seem to avoid 2-hr. buffering times before playback even started. I smelled shenanigans and started digging. With some help finding the debug menu for the streaming video player, I set out to figure out why playback was so slow. It seems that Netflix is significantly throttling Watch Instantly users (on the PC) down to an unusable cap — in my case, 48 kbps — on a per-connection basis."

March 14th Officially Becomes National Pi Day 321

whitefox writes "The scoop from CNet is that 'The US House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a resolution introduced two days earlier that designates March 14, 2009 (3/14, get it?) as National Pi Day. It urges schools to take the opportunity to teach their students about Pi and "engage them about the study of mathematics."' The resolution is available online. I doubt it'll ever become a national holiday, but the Pi string in the article is pretty cool in a nerdy sort of way."

We think that the combination with Yahoo would accelerate things in a very exciting way, because they do have great engineers, they have done a lot of great work.
