Why Video Game Movie Adaptations Need New Respect 283

An anonymous reader writes "Hollywood has yet to find any video game property it is willing to treat with the same respect as J.R.R. Tolkien or J.K.Rowling, arguably still following the principles that led to the appalling Super Mario Bros. movie in 1992: 'A game lacks the complexity that a movie requires.' Yet a modern gaming masterpiece such as Mass Effect has the depth and breadth to deserve better treatment in the proposed trilogy. Is Hollywood again going to disrespect fans who, in this case, have as much right to see a good plot respected as the readers of Lord Of The Rings? This article discusses why and how Hollywood should grow up regarding these adaptations."

Beaver Dam Visible From Space 286

ygslash writes "The Hoover Dam no longer holds the title of the world's widest dam. Satellite photos of northern Alberta, Canada, show that several families of beavers have apparently joined forces to build a dam 850 meters wide, more than twice as wide as the Hoover Dam."

Novell Wins vs. SCO 380

Aim Here writes "According to Novell's website, and the Salt Lake Tribune, the jury in the SCO v. Novell trial has returned a verdict: Novell owns the Unix copyrights. This also means that SCO's case against IBM must surely collapse too, and likely the now bankrupt SCO group itself. It's taken 7 years, but the US court system has eventually done the right thing ..." No doubt this is the last we will ever hear of any of this.

Comment Re:Sounds like techies aren't getting enough sleep (Score 1) 431

I agree, I have obstructive sleep apnea.

Seeing a sleep specialist and spending a night in a sleep clinic can be a trial. And you will likely get to do it again if you are dianosed with obstructive sleep apnea. The good news is that sleep apnea can be treated and you will feel so very much better when you get a good night's sleep and the benefit will be apparent after the first night that you sleep without the interruptions of apnea.

Any one who has symtoms like that should seek medical advice. Like many I was reluctant to do so, after much prodding I finally gave in and talked to my doctor about my sleep problems. It took some time to get through the specialist referral and the sleep clininc, but was well worth doing. The last two years since I was diagnosed and treated have been so much better than the preceding years when I was, in effect, half asleep much of the time.

Good luck.

Lucent Sues Microsoft, Wants All 360s Recalled 475

robyannetta writes "Lucent has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft, demanding that they pull all Xbox 360s from the market. Lucent claims that Microsoft has violated their MPEG2 patents which they claim they patented in 1993." While it's unlikely console will be pulled from shelves, it's one way to generate some publicity.

Journal Journal: Confluence 2005

OK, I am a Sci-Fi fan. I have started to go to Sci_fi conventions and have discovered filk music. I'm hooked, last weekend I went to Confluence the Pittsburgh Sci-Fi Convention. It was much smaller then the cons I have been to previously. But in some respects it was the best I've been to. Randy Hoffman put together a fantastic filk program with featured guest filk group Escape Key. Michelle Dockrey is cute as can be, and has an absolutely amazing voice. A multi-talented singer and song

Operating Systems

Journal Journal: Old OS's

I like the idea of open sourcing OS/2 and other no-longer supported OS's. But I suspect that outside encumberances will prevent many of the desired OS's from being released. As OS/2 seems to be in current or recent use in some form (ATM's were mentioned) one would suspect that there may be some income as well as contractual limitations to its release beyond the likely links to Microsoft. Yeah, I am chicken to post this any more publicly than in my journal.
