Comment Biggest issue is support infrastructure (Score 2) 214

The biggest issue in a windstorm event is (tornado or hurricane), is likely going to be damage to the support infrastructure, and possibly generator fuel. For example the external heat exchangers mounted outside the building would likely be blown away or damaged, thus effecting the datacenter's ability to keep cool. Also if the datacenter has an external fuel tank or external generator those could be damaged and made inoperable.

In a very large hurricane scenario I'd think that fuel deliveries might be problematic in the first 24-72hrs after the event. Probably due to inability to safely get the fuel trucks into the facility due to downed lines/trees/bridges.

No. WinPhone 7 has no extra abilities to be managed by an Exchange Server. You'd think it would have been a slam dunk to design the phone and release free software for Corporate world to be able to administrate them the way they do Blackberries. Sadly, no. Here's a microsoft page here describing all of the Exchange Activesync functions not supported on WP7 RTM: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/exchange-activesync-considerations-when-using-windows-phone-7-clients.aspx Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5 had WAY more support.

It was extremely amazing for someone who's never felt an earthquake like that. A slow rumbling to start, felt like a big truck passing outside, then building up, and starting to shake the house more, then significant vibrations going on for some time. Very different from the last big earthquake that hit closer to Oklahoma City last Oct 2010. That one had a short sharp type vibration that didnt last very long at all. http://newsok.com/oklahoma-earthquake-small-to-moderate-quake-rattles-nerves/article/3504094

Comment Time for a Constitutional Amendment (Score 1) 617

It's time to seriously get behind passing a constitutional amendment requiring all political races be funded by public money, and restrict the ability of outside sources to campaign for officials or for parties.

It's a race to see if we can fix the flaw in the Constitution before the government is completely corrupted by corporate interests. The only way it'll stand in the courts it to change the rules that Supreme Court has to play by. I.e. Change the Constitution of the United States with an Amendment passed by the state legislatures.

So I'm working in this company's datacenter on their networking equipment. But it's installed is such a crappy way that there's a floor tile pulled right next to the rack and the cables are run down into that hole. I'm working around on the equipment and step down into the hole by accident, at that point I notice that it's suddenly alot quieter where I'm standing, I look down and realize I'd just stepped on the power button of a power strip that most of the networking equipment was plugged into. Oh Sh!t. At the time the room was empty except for me, I quickly turn the strip back on. About the time the switches are just finishing coming back up one of the companies IT guys comes in and asks if anything's going on. I look at him a little confused and say "I'm not sure, what's up?". The network's back up by the time they noticed it.... I probably should have admitted it, but no harm, no foul. :)

As someone who's accidentally announced the entire Internet routing table to an ISP when setting up a dual-homed configuration, I can confirm that good upstream ISPs do BGP filtering. I was trying to troubleshoot what was going on, and the Tech on the other end was helpful enough to tell me that I was sending him the full route table. Fortunately they had filters in place to stop them from going out any further and impacting anything. But I had it clearly demonstrated to me how important filters are on both ends of the connections.

Comment In many areas you cannot use the term "Engineer" (Score 1) 736

For almost 20 years I've used the term "Engineer" associated with some other term as my job title. But recently I found out that this is not legal in the state of Oklahoma and in many other places across the world. The term Engineer and Engineering is reserved for those with specific Engineering training, degrees, and licenses. Wiki details some of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engineer

My place of business recently had legal notice that it had to cease using the terms "Network Engineer", "Director of Engineering", "Software Engineer", etc. The board that sent this is State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, http://www.ok.gov/pels/ and by state law they have the right to stop anyone from using the term Engineer if they are not licensed correctly.

Also I saw someone say they used the term "Software Architect", "Architect" is also a legally protected title in many places.

So now I'm a Consultant.... I've sent a letter to my legislators to complain about the boards actions as I feel that the term "Engineer" has become associated with someone who has a general area of expertise, not someone who has a specific license. But I doubt it will have any effect. :(
