With the Shuttle put to bed, and now Constellation, NASA is done.

NASA is by no means done nor are they sending up just a few probes. In addition to MSL, there are several missions getting ready to launch over the next few years to Jupiter and other bodies. We are sending up a number of Earth science satellites to get the data to prove or disprove the claims of global warming and to find out new information about our planet. In addition there are missions that are in development to get samples from the moon and to go to Venus. Finally, some of our probes are still traveling to their targets deep in space. As for Constellation, I for one think this will be a boon for NASA. Constellation and its dream of easy manned space flight in our time was a waste of money and resources. We want a real mission, lets go to MARS! Forget the moon. If anything Constellation was an exercise in engineering not science and exploration. This decision does not set us back but frees up money for NASA to do some real science. Lets face it, a rad-hardened, thermally tolerant robot that can take huge accelerations and feed on sunlight is way better than a sack of meat. PS I work for JPL so I kinda have a stake in this.

Linux Patch Clears the Air For Use of Microsoft's FAT Filesystem 272

Ars Technica is reporting that a new kernel patch may provide a workaround to allow use of Microsoft's FAT file system on Linux without paying licensing fees. "Andrew Tridgell, one of the lead developers behind the Samba project, published a patch last week that will alter the behavior of the Linux FAT implementation so that it will not generate both short and long filenames. In situations where the total filename fits within the 11-character limit, the filesystem will generate only a short name. When the filename exceeds that length, it will only generate a long name and will populate the short name value with 11 invalid characters so that it is ignored by the operating system."

Standard Cellphone Chargers For Europeans 257

k33l0r writes "The European Commission is confident that all major cellphone companies have reached an agreement on a standard cellphone charger for consumers within the EU. 'People will not have to throw away their charger whenever they buy a new phone,' said EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen. Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments have all signed the agreement."

Lenovo Tinkers With Larger Delete and Escape Keys 586

Slatterz writes "After a year's research, Lenovo boffins have decided the time is right to install larger Delete and Escape keys on their updated ThinkPad laptop T400s range. While it is a small change, it is fairly radical to tinker with an area of hardware which has been largely unchanged since the 19th century. What convinced them to make the size-change was doing some tests on users to see which keys they use the most. They found that on average, people used the Escape and Delete keys 700 times per week, yet those were the only non-letter keys that Lenovo hasn't made any bigger." The article says Caps Lock may be next on the agenda; death is too good for Caps Lock.
