It can be quite useful in certain circumstances. Suppose u talk to a mobile phone, asking it to "dial" a series of numbers is stupid idea. Why not press the "dial" key and speak a friend's name, then the phone dials the friend's number automatically, with a confirm option. Further more, speech technology has many variations useful. Such as voice identification, and voice pressure analysis (VPA).
