Why do they need more people like this? From the article I read it sounds like he has other options, this guy isn't living in the middle of rural Kansas, he's in hollywood, CA.

“Your competitors now have speeds of over 200Mbps,” Epstein wrote in his ad. “Why is AT&T, a leading communications company, treating us so shabbily in North Hollywood?"

He's a crackpot that would rather spend thousands instead of having to call another company and kicking AT&T to the curb.

I think there is more behind the scenes there. Apple CEO is on the President's advisory board, sees that Tariffs will at some point make Apple less profitable. The bargaining chip he has is, we make this computer in the US. If we stop making it in the US, then when negotiating for exemptions on the tariffs we can say we'll bring that manufacturing back to the US. Trump and Cook both can be "Winners" while in reality nothing has changed.

Too bad this didn't happen in China. Apple would be jumping to unlock the phone. I always shake my head when Apple gets on their soap box about encryption and how they stand up for freedom / privacy, yet will bend over when it comes down to impacting profits.

** Not saying that I think Apple should un-encrypt the phone, or that they shouldn't. I think it's more nuanced than that, but just hate the "Yay Apple" while in most situations its all about what will make them the most profit.

Yet another vote for McMaster. I bought quite a few pieces parts from them when I was building a oversozed go-kart dune buggy a couple years back.

baileynet.com/ is another good place for bearings, and flanges which can be combined to make most things mobile. They had the best prices when I was searching for AXLE bearings, and you have to sign up as a company (much like ordering from dell small business, uhh.. yeah. ALAN INC.).

There used to be some good surplus places which had old army surplus generators and the like, which may be scavenged, but I cant remember the site name.

Journal Journal: Sprint Fooling With DNS Queries

Sprint is doing something odd with DNS queries. More than odd, it's disturbing.

Anyone using Sprint's Wireless Network card, try this experiment. Open a terminal and do a host lookup on slasdot.org. Tell host or nslookup to use a non-public IP, or an IP you know is not running DNS. Use the verbose output. You'll find that the server you indicated "responded" with information.

For example, on OSX or Linux do this:
host -v slashdot.org 192.0.0.1

A Year In Prison For a 20-Second Film Clip? 1169

PizzaFace writes "It's Jhannet's 19th birthday, so her boyfriend borrows a camcorder to memorialize the occasion, and they head to the mall. They goof around, recording each other in the food court, then decide to catch the Transformers matinee, which started a few minutes earlier. During a big action scene, Jhannet takes the camcorder and records a 20-second clip to show her little brother. A few minutes later, cops who were called by the manager come in with flashlights, arrest Jhannet, confiscate the camcorder, and, at the behest of Regal Cinemas, charge her with film piracy. 'I was terrified,' said Jhannet. 'I was crying. I've never been in trouble before.' If convicted, she could be sentenced to a year in prison and a $2,500 fine. The police say they lack discretion because Regal Cinemas chose to prosecute: 'They were the victim in this case, and they felt strongly enough about it.' The National Association of Theater Owners supports Regal's 'zero-tolerance' prosecution standard: 'We cannot educate theater managers to be judges and juries in what is acceptable. Theater managers cannot distinguish between good and bad stealing.'"
