Well, if you actually paid attention, you'd know that he's a cop, pretty high up in the dept, not "just" a CSI hired to track blood spatters.
I've never been canoeing before, but I imagine there must be just a few simple heuristics you have to remember... Yes, don't fall out, and don't hit rocks.
