Comment Linux in General (Score 1) 126

Do you still feel that you are an accurate and complete proxy for the linux community? You stated as such about 10 years ago...

And if so why have you thought so over time? If not....what changed?

You many years ago claimed you were a proxy for the web community and I disagreed in public with the IETF. Just a curiosity.

I have changed over the years...perhaps you have grown a bit as well...

Officials Use Google Earth To Find Unlicensed Pools 650

Officials in Riverhead, New York are using Google Earth to root out the owners of unlicensed pools. So far they've found 250 illegal pools and collected $75,000 in fines and fees. Of course not everyone thinks that a city should be spending time looking at aerial pictures of backyards. from the article: "Lillie Coney, associate director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, DC, said Google Earth was promoted as an aid to curious travelers but has become a tool for cash-hungry local governments. 'The technology is going so far ahead of what people think is possible, and there is too little discussion about community norms,' she said."

California Legislature Declares "Cuss-Free" Week 262

shewfig writes "The California legislature, which previously tried to ban incandescent light bulbs, just added to the list of banned things ... swear words! Fortunately, the measure only applies for the first week of March, and compliance is voluntary — although, apparently, there will be a 'swear jar' in the Assembly and the Governor's mansion. No word yet on whether the Governator intends to comply."

netizen writes "CircleID is reporting a large-scale DDoS attack affecting all of Network Solutions' name servers for the past 48 hours, potentially affecting millions of websites and emails around the world hosting their domain names on the company's servers. The NANOG mailing list indicates that it is due to a very large-scale UDP/53 DDoS which Network Solutions has also confirmed: 'There is a spike in DNS query volumes that is causing latency for the delay in web sites resolving. This is a result of a DDOS attack. We are taking measures to mitigate the attack and speed up queries.""

I read this is going to be a HUGE user of bandwidth once they start sending the data around the world to be analyzed. Is it a good time to invest in network providers? I think there will be good plays along with all the cool scientific stuff we'll get out of it. I know the economy is looking poor, but I don't see internet usage shrinking any time soon.

I'll be sleeping soundly tonite.
