Comment Data Polluting the Caribbean (Score 2) 284

Is data collection really the main concern here?
Hopefully this time Elon will arrange a clean up of the tons of debris about to wash up on many foreign beaches.
Is it about time he started spending some cash on simply fixing up this planet rather than hoping that a few of the mega-rich will get to escape another.
(I write this on behalf of all the flora and fauna that donâ(TM)t have much of a voice on this planet we are rapidly fâ¦ing up. ;)

Comment 1996 Documentary (Score 2) 134

For those who haven't seen it, I highly recommend Cringely's 1996 3 part documentary "Triumph of the Nerds" covering the rise of Microsoft, Apple, and the Information Age. Produced before others began re-writing history, and written by someone tech savvy for viewers who were tech savvy. A must see still today - more than ever.

Comment Re:FOMO (Score 1) 81

I’m old enough to remember friends getting badly hit by similar pyramid schemes in the 1980’s.
- Invent a commodity that is essentially worthless
- Talk it up big
- Demonstrate it’s increasing value
- Generate FOMO
- Get out before everyone cottons on
Prediction; just as night follows day
It will end in tears for those left holding the bag

Comment Should have made 500 of the 1000 patients placebo (Score 1) 284

Pretty meaningless study, except shows likely safe combination of drugs at recommended dosages, but zero evidence they help.

Apart from other noted comments (retrospective, no placebo - so nothing to compare with) these drugs were in part also given to asymptomatic outpatients - some in their teens, 20s, and 30s, so I’m very glad the morality rate was low ... and don’t get me started on Remdesivir, which (at best) will probably be like every other anti-viral we are currently using (if treated EARLY might get SICK people out of hospital a couple of days early but makes little difference to mortality, and certainly no difference to the worried well

Disappointing comment Michael, but far worse is being given a "score 3" on this site.
I moved to Melbourne more than 50 years and there's been a great tradition of vilifying each new wave of immigrants
However, it usually reflects more on the family of those doing the denigrating - in my experience at least.
(I was born from English dad & "Aussie" mum whose family was hugely racist against Australian aboriginals - I never worked out why.)
