300 deaths is bad. But implying that a tech oriented site reporting the economic effect on a piece of technology due to a natural disaster is wrong seems a bit odd to me. We can provide our supports to the people in the disaster area while contemplating how said disaster affect global economy at the same time. We don't need to choose just one.

I'm running CM6 RC3 (haven't updated to release yet) on a N1. The situation with other phone may be different. To test with no carrier, I pulled the SIM out of the phone. A quick test show WIFI works, GPS works (tested via opening up map and see that it has accurate location instead of the location with a radius when it can only do wifi), can access market (although I didn't download or buy anything). GMail and Facebook app works too. That is about all I tried. I cannot guarantee that everything works, but at least the basic stuff should. This is much better than my last phone, where it locks if there isn't a SIM inside.

It is quite clear that you have a much deeper understanding of different languages than I do, and I agree with a lot of what you said. I do find that the phonetic rule of the alphabetic system makes it easier to guess at the spelling of new words when compare to ideographs.

The other thing with English, is that when reading, if you come across a word for which you know, but have never seen it before, you will almost always be able to know which word it means. This is not possible in Chinese unless guessing the word from context.

I do not fully agree with this. For traditional Chinese (not the simplified one), you can often breaks a word down into its parts and guess at its meaning fairly accurately. After all, that is the point of ideographs.

Last I check, a good Chinese dictionary is about the same size as a good English dictionary. So we either learn how to write each character, or how to spell each word. I don't really see the point of suddenly switching to a alphabet system when all that does is swifting the work from character memorization to spelling memorization.
