It doesn't seem to me she's objecting because of problems with gender identity but rather the grammar problems of using "they" etc. as a singular pronoun. I'm slowly coming around on this but understand why she's hesitant (if that is, in fact, her objection). Language needs to be clear, thus rules. Inserting what's long been a plural is just kinda jarring unless it's very clear you're talking about a single person. In writing and speaking, it's important not to confuse the reader/listener unnecessarily. I absolutely agree people should be called what they want to be called but her workaround seems, to me, not discriminatory but her own stand for clarity in language.
