It's money grabbing in that the rate they picked is designed to be unrealistic. Imgur's current API price is what, $0.06 CPM and that's the rack rate, not an enterprise negotiated rate, while Reddit wants 4x that @ $0.24 CPM for enterprise level clients. Seems reasonable to conclude their goal isn't to charge a fair rate (which nobody is arguing with - including the 3rd party app devs). Their goal is to charge a rate so high it will kill 3rd parties or at least be so outrageous that if anyone is willing to pay it, they're making bank off them.

I can only speak for myself but I don't believe I'm alone in saying that I'm unhappy I won't be able to use those 3rd party apps, and as a moderator for a gaming sub I'm unhappy about the risks around future moderation capabilities.

I agree he's a tool, but not that he's blind to what he's doing. It's more likely he knows exactly what he's doing, it's just his goals are not aligned with the best interests of the site's users. These putzes just want to cash out with the IPO, regardless of the impact on users or longer term consequences for the company beyond anything that affects the IPO itself.
