Journal freejung's Journal: I've Become a Crackhead 6

Actually, it's even worse than that. I'm addicted to WoW. Like, seriously, hardcore addicted already, like forgetting to eat dinner until the middle of the night and getting very little sleep for several nights in a row kind of addicted.

I know myself well, and I have never played MMORPGs before because I knew this would happen. But some very good friends of mine in Boulder are playing it, and I saw it as an excuse to do something with them.

It's fun. It's way too fun. I could quit any time, of course, I just don't want to. Yeah, that's the ticket...

Anyway, just in case anybody was wondering what happened to me -- well, that's what.

Also, in case any of you guys are playing too, let me know, I'd love to play with you. I'm Wolfthraine on Doomhammer and Eliduc on Suramar, and I'd be open to making another character to team up with a slashdot group of some kind. Maybe we could make a slashdot JE circle guild or something.

Seriously, kids, this game kicks ass...

  • I want a hands-free, tele-camaratic, MMORPG with a speech interface so I can read and take notes with the other hands. Plus, it has to run in a remote window on a web browser. There will be a little helper app that listens to the microphone, and either sends audio or speech rec results or both, and will get a browser frame to refresh when needed. Plus, there needs to be image maps so that everything is clickable, and a way to type commands and messages (or select from menu(s)) when the speech input is do
    • Speech interface is a good idea, though I think that for combat playability, you want both. I can click faster than I can talk. But I think a mixed speech/mouse/keyboard interface will probably be the standard soon enough.

Even without it, it's still enormously fun.

      • Do they have the problem that to move your have to hold down the forward key? I always hated that. I spent hours holding down the forward button and it annoyed me so much. Why can't I just click forward and then "lock" it on until some other directional key is pressed?

      • I used to be a big quake three player and experimented with speech interfaces. I can't remember the name of the program I used, but I would record quick little segments of my voice and map them to macros to change weapons or take certain actions in the game, using a headset while playing. I eventually gave up on the whole thing for two reasons. one was that there was a slight lag between me saying something and the computer figuring out what to do then taking action. Even a 10th of a second wasn't fast

    I'm relieved.

By the way I didn't know anything about American politics from late 18c to early 19c. Very recently I knew about duel between Hamilton and Burr, Marshall's role on judiciary review over Madison v Marbury, President Thomas Jefferson's war with the Barbary Pirates. Among new ones, Roe v Wade was a remarkable court ruling...I think I used to learn very vigorously on European history more than American's. But now
