I too have just moved to crux (from Fedore Core 1). One of the most useful ports I have found is 'prt-get' (/usr/ports/contrib/prt-get/). It can automatically sort out dependancies and stuff for you.
e.g:
'prt-get depends xboard' tells you that you need to install gnuchess, then xboard, while 'prt-get depinst xboard' will do that for you.
It does other useful port stuff as well. Well worth looking at.
